The lead character in the upcoming Hindi survival film ‘Mission Raniganj’ is played by Akshay Kumar. The film, directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, will also cast Parineeti Chopra and is largely inspired on the 1989 Raniganj Coalfields Collapse in West Bengal. Akshay Kumar plays the brave Jaswant Singh Gill, who rescued the lives of several miners during the collapse.

What is the real story behind Mission Raniganj?

John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly of the East India Company discovered Raniganj Coalmine in 1774. The mine is located in the Asansol and Durgapur subdivisions of West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district. Lord Warren Hastings awarded the two men a permit to mine coal there, and thus coal mining in India began for the first time. Regular mining at Raniganj began in 1820 under Alexander & Co, and for the most of the 19th and 20th centuries, Raniganj was the country’s largest coal producer.

Mining was done in a haphazard manner back then due to industrial backwardness and colonial governance. There were no pillars to support the mine ceilings and walls at the time, and all coal veins were drained in order to acquire as many resources as possible. Miners’ life were highly dangerous, as they were continually threatened by collapses.

On November 13, 1989, miners at Raniganj set off a series of explosives to tear down coal barriers. The blast shook the mine structure, and a wall in an underground region near the miners’ work site cracked. Water flooded in as a result of the crack, killing six miners. Those near the lift were brought to safety, while 65 miners were trapped within because to the collapse of the mine. The water level in the pit was rapidly increasing, and the mine construction was unstable, making rescue of the trapped miners impossible.

When everyone else had given up hope, Jaswant Singh Gill, a young and brave mine engineer from IIT Dhanbad, stepped in.

Gill created a six-foot-high iron capsule with a 21-inch diameter and dropped it within by excavating a fresh borehole. He utilised a 12-tonne crane to lower and lift the capsule, and then individually lifted each of the 65 miners trapped within. The entire rescue operation took Gill 6 hours and was seen by nearly 2,000 people. And eventually, this wise and valiant guy saved all of the miners trapped beneath the hole.

After the last of the miners were rescued, Gill described an incredible emotion. Coal India commemorates Rescue Day every year on November 16 to salute Gill and his bravery. For his bravery, the then-President of India, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, bestowed the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak on him.

The film, which stars Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Kumud Mishra, and Ravi Kishan, will be released in theatres worldwide on October 6, 2023. It will be thrilling to watch a true hero’s story brought to life on the big screen.
